Named "big water" by the Washoe Tribes that inhabited the region, Lake Tahoe has enough water to cover the state of California up to 14 inches! Its water is also 97 percent pure, and its average depth is 989 feet; its deepest point, a profound 1,645 feet, makes Lake Tahoe the third deepest lake in all of North America. Lake Tahoe is also considered "the lake in the sky" because of its elevation level - 6,229 feet, and it is surrounded by the main Sierra Nevada on the left and one of the Sierra's eastern offshoots, The Carson Range, on the right. The mountains rise more than 4,000 feet from the shores of the lake. At this height, there is a great deal of snow on the slopes of the surrounding mountains, making the Lake Tahoe area a favorite skiing destination during the winter months. Resorts line the shores of Lake Tahoe, as well as small cites and towns dot the lake's shores to be of service to the tourists who ski on the slopes. In the summer and fall, the area's natural beauty is not lost as trails are open in the national parks in the surrounding area offering breathtaking views and hiking and camping opportunities.
Lake Tahoe has a rich and colorful history, and remnants of it can be seen throughout the area. In the time of the California Gold Rush people were lured to the Sierra Mountains range by the idea of riches and fortune. When Comstock Lode was discovered it increased the traffic in the area, but it posed a threat to the ecology of the area since its resources were quickly depleted. After Comstock Lode's decline, the area was able to naturally flourish once more. Elaborate hotels began to be built in the beginning of the 20th century, due to the fact that the lake had become something of a retreat for the rich. After roads were paved through the area, the land was open for all classes to enjoy, not just the rich. When the roads around the lake started to be plowed during the winter, it stopped being only a retreat, and people began to take up residence along the shores of the lake. In order to keep the beauty of the natural area, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency was established. Around the area can still be found the remains of the Comstock Lode era, which may excite some history buffs, but most of the time visitors come for the skiing and for the breathtaking natural beauty.
